FOUNDER'S BREAKFAST STOUT

The coffee lover's consummate beer. Brewed with an abundance of flaked oats, bitter and imported chocolates, and Sumatra and Kona coffee, this stout has an intense fresh-roasted java nose topped with a frothy, cinnamon-colored head that goes forever.

"For the past four years, brewmaster Garrett Oliver has been working on a massive project. It's the ultimate beer collaboration, but it's not a beer.  Published this September by Oxford University Press, it's The Oxford Companion to Beer, the most comprehensive book on beer ever published, featuring 160 experts covering more than 1,100 subjects. It's a momentous thing, so Garrett (Editor-in-Chief), Horst Dornbusch (Associate Editor, writer, scholar, man-about-town) and Thomas Kraus-Weyermann (writer and master maltster) hatched a plan. Together, they brewed our next Brewmaster's Reserve beer, called The Companion.

Thomas created special new floor malts for The Companion, which is brewed in an old style called "wheat wine", a wheat-based equivalent to barley wine. The floor malts give this beer a juicy malt character of considerable depth, 55% malted wheat gives it a surprising lightness on the palate, while our house ale yeast lends a gentle fruitiness. The Oxford Companion will impart knowledge, while The Companion imparts conviviality. Maybe you really can have it all?"

My good friend David Little recently presented this book to me. It is a great read anytime, but even better when paired with a beer.

DISTILLERY DAMES
After much anticipation...the Distillery Dames has begun! We are a group of women with the common interest of Craft Beer. Our goal is to have fun while learning, sharing and shedding the stereotype of women and beer. Yes, women do like Craft Beer!

The Distillery Dames is a ladies social club with no membership fees, no hidden agendas,  the craft beer lover, craft beer & chocolate and possibly some brewand nothing to buy. Our membership will be women in the industry, women that want to begin learning, women that want to further their knowledge of Craft Beer. We will have a once per month meeting with each meeting focusing on a different topic. Some ideas include: pairing craft beer with food, tastings, cooking with craft beer, gifting for the craft beer lover, craft beer and chocolate and possibly some brewery tours.

Our first Meet and Greet will be Wed., October 12th at 7:00 pm, with a beginner's class - very laid back and informal. The meeting will always coincide with Ladies Night at The Distillery (ladies drinks at Happy Hour prices from 4:00 till closing). Ladies Night will be an opportunity for those women that don't already know about us to join in.

The Distillery website DistillerySavannah.com will have some new features just for us: a Distillery Dames menu tab with calendar info, our purpose, e-mail sign-up for Dames updates and a new blog, written by the youngest Volen, Julia. Also, a hot t-shirt for women is now available "Real Women Drink Craft Beer."

We're really excited about this new venture and hope to see you at our first gathering.

Although this innaugural event is already in the past, the next meeting for the Dames will be on Tuesday, November 15th at 7 PM on the stage at The Distillery. November's meeting will focus on chocolate and beer pairings as well as sharing your worst beer experience.
Hope to see you there.

DISTILLERY FANS AND FRIENDS,
anna myers
As the holiday season approaches, I felt that it was very important to send a newsletter to update all of you on the recent happenings at The Distillery.

We had a very busy fall as we hosted a very successful "Oktoberfest and Pumpkin" Beer Club and the innaugural "Distillery Dames" events. Great beers were poured including Heavy Seas Greater Pumpkin, Southern Tier Creme Brulee and Pumking, Dogfish Head Punkin, and a handful of German and American craft Oktoberfests. As we move toward the colder weather, you can look forward to seeing a lot more stouts/porters as well as the popular winter warmer styles from American brewers.
anna myers
The fall also marked a busy time for tourism in the great city of Savannah. We hosted great people involved with the Craft Beer Festival,  Rock and Roll Marathon, various concerts at the Civic Center, and most recently the Savannah Film Festival. We love the city of Savannah for hosting such great events throughout the year, as we are almost always packed for business with reservations in the books.

For this month, we will be having our beer club event with Schmatlz Brewing Company....the brewers of He'Brew and Coney Island Lagers. The event date will be Tuesday, November 29th, but check out the below article for more details. Also be sure to check out the newest Distillery faction group only known as the Distillery Dames. I have not been allowed to partake in the planning or operations for this group, solely because I am a man. Normally I would scream sexism at the idea, but I fully welcome these ladies and encourage what they are doing and what they are planning in their upcoming days. I will have more details on this below in a seperate article....so for all you fellas out there looking to get your girl out of the house for a night, forward this over to her.
 anna myers
Lastly, with Thanksgiving right around the corner and then Christmas sneaking up behind it, now is the perfect time to come in and buy a gift certificate or a beer club membership for your family and friends. We also have a new surplus of Distillery t-shirts to be purchased with a variety of colors and sizes. Distillery Proprietress, Lori Volen, even went as far as designing new pink t-shirts for women with the bold statement on the back reading, "Real Women Drink Craft Beer!".

I look forward to seeing all of you this November and December and wish only the best for you and your families through this holiday season. Always remember that a rich brown ale or saison pairs better with your turkey and stuffing than one of those ole' crappy Budweisers.

Continued Cheers,
Benjamin Volen

BREWERY SPOTLIGHT

Cigar City Brewing Company (Tampa, FL)

All of these Florida people passing through our beloved city had been taunting me in the past about our inability to bring in these beers from Cigar City from Tampa, FL. Well taunt no more folks, we have had the opportunity through Savannah Distributing to bring in some of these fantastic products that are listed as top-rated on beeradvocate.com and ratebeer.com. Here is a little history of the brewery and all of the products we are currently carrying from them:

cigarcitybrewing.com
_______________________________________________________________

"Cigar City Brewing was founded with two goals in mind. The first to make the world's best beer and the second to share with people near and far the fascinating culture and heritage of the Cigar City of Tampa.

From its past as the world's largest cigar producer to its Latin roots and the many other diverse peoples that call it home, Tampa draws on many sources to develop its unique culture.

At CCB we are fascinated by Tampa's history and suspect you will be too."

"Cigar City Brewing is comprised of a 15 barrel (one barrel is 31 gallons) brewhouse occupying 6,600 sq. ft. of warehouse space in the Carver City-Lincoln Gardens neighborhood of Tampa.

We currently have nineteen fermentors. Six 15 barrel, ten 30 barrel and three 60 barrels. There is rarely a day when each tank isn't filled with beer.

We use the highest quality ingredients we can lay our hands on and that is not just marketing jargon. If it makes better beer, we use it. We also strive to use local ingredients when and where we can. Not only do fresh local ingredients help us to make better beer, it helps us to make beer that reflects the culture and heritage of Tampa Bay."

Cigar City Jai Alai IPA: 7.5% ABV, 70 IBU's

Jai Alai, a game native to the Basque region of Spain, is played on a court called a fronton. Jai Alai players attempt to catch a ball using a curved mitt whilst the ball travels at speeds up to 188mph! Proving they have a sense of humor the Spanish dubbed this game, with its ball traveling at racecar speeds, "the merry game." Tampa was once home to a bustling Jai Alai fronton but sadly all that remains of Jai Alai in the Tampa Bay area is this India Pale Ale that we brew in tribute to the merry game. The India Pale Ale style of beer has its roots in the ales sent from England to thirsty British troops in India during the 18th century. Pair Jai Alai India Pale Ale with Beef Empanadas, Deviled Crabs and other spicy dishes.
_______________________________________________________________

Cigar City Maduro Brown Ale: 5.5% ABV, 25 IBU's

Maduro is a Northern English-style brown ale with some American affectations. Maduro is higher in alcohol than the common English brown ale and features flaked oats in the malt bill which imparts a silky body and works to mesh the roasted, toasted and chocolate components together in Maduro's complex malt profile. The end result is a remarkably full-flavored yet approachable and sessionable brown ale that pairs well with mild to medium cigars.

_______________________________________________________________

Cigar City Cubano-Style Espresso Brown Ale: 5.5% ABV, 25 IBU's

This rich brown ale is redolent with Cuban-style roasted espresso beans, sweet caramel and toffee and hints of dry nuttiness. Cuban Espresso is a popular drink in the Cigar City of Tampa owing to its many Sicilian and Cuban immigrants. The beans for Cubano-Style Espresso Brown Ale are roasted locally by Mazzaro's Italian Market and Deli in St. Petersburg to our exact specifications.

_______________________________________________________________

Jose Marti American Porter: 8% ABV, 65 IBU's

This rich brown ale is redolent with Cuban-style roasted espresso beans, sweet caramel and toffee and hints of dry nuttiness. Cuban Espresso is a popular drink in the Cigar City of Tampa owing to its many Sicilian and Cuban immigrants. The beans for Cubano-Style Espresso Brown Ale are roasted locally by Mazzaro's Italian Market and Deli in St. Petersburg to our exact specifications.

Also check our bottle listing regularly as we have been known to have Humidor Series IPA, Jai Alai White Oak IPA, and we anticipate getting more and more from this fantastic brewery.

About The Distillery
anna myers
The Volen family moved to Savannah from Mount Airy, Maryland in 2008, in which we quickly discovered a missing feature: an ideal watering hole for locals and tourists alike with great beer and fantastic food. The doors to The Distillery first opened in November of 2008 and we haven't looked back since. We will be celebrating our third year in business on November 27th!

The Distillery is now Savannah's premiere craft beer bar and restaurant located in the heart of the Hostess City. We currently offer 21 draught ales and lagers on our three beautiful French towers and have over 90 bottles in various sizes and styles.

Our food is best described as classic American pub grub with an unique twist. Chef Matt only uses USDA Prime Angus Beef products and proudly serves Georgia Wild Shrimp. Our vegetable and fruits are locally grown and our meats are roasted in house to ensure the qulaity and tastiness.

Please drop in anytime and talk to either a manager or one of the friendly owners and share your story!
